Maria FÜRHACKER is scientist and teacher at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, Department of Water, Atmosphere and Environment, Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Water Pollution Control in Austria.
She has a background in food and biotechnology, did her PhD in the field of sanitary engineering and her habilitation in environmental chemistry at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna.
Her research focus is on the fate and behavior of pollutants (e.g. endocrine disrupters, drugs, POPs, heavy metals, cytostatics) in waters, risk assessment, risk management and risk reduction measures including pollution prevention and removal processes, water quality management, groundwater protection. Special emphases she puts into interdisciplinary projects for the development of new effect-based methods and their future implementation in legislation.
Maria Fürhacker was chair of IWA SG “Assessment and Control of Hazardous Substances in Water” from 2006 – 2017 and is the current secretary of the SG.

David Sedlak is the Plato Malozemoff Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also the Co-Director of the Berkeley Water Center and Deputy Director of the NSF engineering research center for Reinventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt). He has been studying trace organic contaminants in the urban water cycle for 25 years and was co-chair of the 2009 Micropol Conference in San Francisco. He has served on the USEPA’s Science Advisory Board for Drinking Water, the State of California’s Expert Advisory Panel for Direct Potable Water Reuse and is currently a member of the National Academies’ Water Science & Technology Board. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering and recipient of numerous awards including the Paul Busch Award for Innovation in Applied Water Quality Research and the Clarke Prize for Excellence in Water Research. Sedlak is the author of Water 4.0: The Past, Present and Future of the World’s Most Vital Resource and serves as editor-in-chief of the ACS journals, Environmental Science & Technology and Environmental Science & Technology Letters.

Jong Hoon LEE is currently working in Techcross Water & Energy (formerly LG-Hitachi Water Solutions, LHWS) as CTO, responsible for both engineering and R&D division. He has a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Seoul National University where he also received his M.S. and B.S. His areas of expertise are processes for wastewater treatment and reuse. Before joining Techcross Water & Energy, he worked as a lead process engineer and a team leader of water and wastewater treatment engineering team of Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction which is a global leading company in desalination field.
LHWS was founded in 2012 as a joint venture company by LG Electronics in Korea and Hitachi in Japan. Techcross, a global No. 1 ballast water management system maker, recently acquired LHWS from LG Electronics to extend its business portfolio into the wider range of water treatment and waste-to-energy field. Techcross Water & Energy provides water and environmental solutions in various business models such as EPC, BOT.

Professor Hu Jiangyong is currently working in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at National University of Singapore as a full Professor specializing in the field of water treatment and water reclamation. Prof. Hu has more than twenty years research experience on water treatment technology enhancement and water quality control. Her main research interests include water innovative treatment technology, emerging contaminants detection and removal, water disinfection and biofilm control, water reclamation and water quality, and energy efficient treatment process. She has published more than 150 technical papers in various international journals. She has acted as chairs of organizing committee and co-president for a few international conferences and symposium. She currently serves as associate editor, guest editor and editorial board members and reviewers for a number of journals as well as funding agencies. She is ex-President of Environmental Engineering Society of Singapore and is currently serving as Chair of International Water Association (IWA) specialist group on Assessment and Control of Toxic and Hazardous Substances in Water and Board Member of International Ultra-Violet Association. She is currently IWA fellow and also recipients of Prosper.net-Scopus Asian Pacific Young Scientist Award in 2009 and Best Environmental Practice Green Apple Award in 2016.
